Assisi celebrates Saint Francis with “Francis in the art of the Madonnari”

Assisi's summer is enriched by an event capable of uniting art, culture, and spirituality. From August 28th to 30th, the lower square of the Basilica of San Francesco will host “Francis in the art of the Madonna artists”, an event organized by the Municipality of Assisi in collaboration with the Sacred Convent to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis.

For the occasion, over 50 Madonna artists from different parts of the world will gather in the Umbrian city to create a major artistic project dedicated to the figure of the Saint and the universal values linked to his message.

The square becomes a great creative space

For the duration of the initiative, the square in front of the Basilica will be transformed into a true open-air atelier. Visitors will be able to witness the works being created, following the artists' work step by step and discovering how images and colors take shape before their eyes.

The program includes the creation of 40 individual works, united by the Franciscan theme, as well as a large collective composition of approximately 50 square meters. An artistic journey that will allow us to observe different styles and interpretations, bringing the tradition of the Madonna artists into dialogue with contemporary times.

A maxi opera by Kurt Wenner

The large collective work will be created based on a project conceived by Kurt Wenner, an American artist internationally known for his experiments in three-dimensional urban art and artistic director of the event.

Twelve artists will work together on the composition, while the other Madonna artists will be engaged in their own individual creations. The result will be a choral tribute to Saint Francis, told through different languages, sensibilities, and perspectives.Dalla tradizione alla valorizzazione del patrimonio

From tradition to the valorization of heritage

The initiative also stems from the relationship between Assisi and Curtatone, in Lombardy, an area strongly linked to the tradition of the Madonna artists thanks to the historic Antichissima Fiera delle Grazie. The artists present in Assisi were selected through the national competition that has been a point of reference for this particular art form for decades.

The support chosen for the works also focuses on heritage conservation: the creations will be created on a special eco-sustainable linoleum and not directly on the pavement of the square. In this way they can be preserved and become a lasting testimony to the demonstration.

An experience to be had in Assisi

Work will begin in the late morning of August 28 and continue until completion on August 30. The event will end with a celebratory moment and the blessing of the works, while the creations will remain visible to the public until September 1°.

“Francis in the art of the Madonna family” thus becomes another opportunity to discover Assisi through an original perspective, in which Franciscan heritage meets contemporary art and international participation.
